SaLT – Service & Leadership Training

SaLT is a discipleship program designed to help guide your teen to become a better leader in their schools and communities, as well as train them to become a future counselor or staff member at Fair Haven.

Participants have dedicated directors who oversee the program, teach leadership concepts, and mentor students throughout the 5 weeks. Teens will learn how to lead Bible studies, camp activities, and gain hands-on leadership skills. They’ll also develop spiritual rhythms that will strengthen their walk with Christ.

Through serving the camp community, helping counselors in cabins, and working with campers, SaLT equips teens with character and leadership skills they can carry into camp, school, and everyday life.

  • SaLT is for teens ages 14–17 who are excited to grow in their faith, serve others, and be part of a team. No prior leadership experience is required, students simply need a willing heart and a positive attitude.

SaLT is a great fit for teens who:

    • Have a desire to grow in their relationship with Christ

    • Enjoy being part of a community

    • Want to learn practical leadership skills

    • Are open to mentoring and teaching

    • Are ready to try new things and step into responsibility

    • Can commit to the full 5-week experience

Each teen comes in with their own experiences and strengths, and the SaLT Directors meet them where they are, encouraging growth in confidence, character, and faith.

  • Each day includes leadership training, hands-on service, personal devotions, team activities, and time assisting counselors in cabins or at camp programs. The schedule is designed to balance learning, serving, rest, and fun.

As the weeks progress, SaLT participants take on increasing levels of responsibility and become more integrated into camp programming.

By Week 5, participants assist directly with a cabin group and support activities under the supervision of camp staff.

At the end of the program, each participant receives a personalized evaluation with encouragement and recommendations for continued growth.

  • No. SaLT participants serve alongside counselors but are never responsible for supervising campers independently.

  • SaLT is a full 5-week experience, and participants are expected to attend the entire session so they can grow as a team and get the full benefit of the program.

  • A full packing list is available here: fairhavencamps.org/packinglist

  • Please see our scholarship page for more information.

  • SaLT participants do not stay on campus over the weekends. A parent or approved adult must pick them up during our regular camper sign-out time, Fridays between 3:00–4:30pm.

Participants return to camp on Sunday afternoon between 3:00-4:30pm.

This weekly rhythm gives students space to rest, reconnect with home, and be ready for another full week of serving and learning at camp.

Important Notes

  • Completion of the SaLT program does not guarantee a staff position at FHC, but it does prepare participants for future leadership opportunities.

Testimonials

I loved being able to learn and grow with the other SaLT kids and also learn how to be a part of bringing the gospel and camp experience to the campers.
— Isaac (SaLT 2023)
I really enjoyed meeting new people and growing closer to Christ. I enjoyed being able to help out the other counselors in activities and cleaning up. In doing SaLT, I got to meet friends that I will never forget. They are my best friends today.
— Xavier (SaLT 2024)
My favorite part was being introduced to the world of being a counselor and making sure I received the proper training. I learned how to work with kids and become a leader. We were given opportunities to run activities, design devotions, and even shadow a cabin for a week! I also love how everyone at Fair Haven is so kind and welcoming. It’s a great community that I’m proud to be a part of. Through SaLT, you grow in your faith, gain knowledge, and meet lifelong friends.
— Ireland (SaLT 2022)
My experience in the SaLT program was awesome! It was a great learning experience and gave me some lifetime bonds. I am still best friends with the girls I did it with. It’s a super fun way to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people. If I could do it again I totally would- one of the best summers of my life!
— Lydia (SaLT 2023)
At first it was hard for me because I wasn’t a Christian, but after camp I felt God with me and knew how to read the Bible. I learned so much and the people in my SaLT group were amazing.
— Ema (SaLT 2023)
